Special Olympics Ohio announces the 2012 Ohio University/Athens Polar Plunge is set for Saturday, February 11, at a new location – Lake Snowden, about eight miles southwest of Athens. According to organizers, the new location is to accommodate the growing number of Polar Plunge participants. The OU/Athens Polar Plunge is held in support of the more than 23,000 Special Olympics athletes inOhio, and is presented by the OU chapter of Phi Kappa Theta and the OU Police Department. Registration is now being accepted for all those courageous enough to be part of this special “Freezin’ for a Reason” fundraising campaign. Also, those who may not feel as courageous are welcome to participate by registering for the “Too Chicken to Plunge” activity. As part of the Polar Plunge experience, participants obtain a minimum $50 in monetary pledges and then agree to jump intoLakeSnowdento earn their pledges. To participate in “Too Chicken to Plunge,” one raises a minimum of $30 and is awarded a “Too Chicken to Plunge” T-shirt – as well the opportunity NOT to Plunge. Teams of chickens may also be formed to support favorite Plungers.

Pre-registration and early check-in for those already registered is Friday, February 10, from 6-9 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, on Union Street, adjacent to campus.
Day-of-event registration and check-in is held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Plunge site. A Costume Contest is scheduled for 1:20 p.m., also at the Plunge site. The Plunge takes place starting at 1:30 p.m. A Post-Plunge Party is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. at Browney’s (admission is free for Plungers; $10 for others).
This popular winter event is among the largest fundraisers for Special Olympics Ohio.

Star Gazing and Bonfire at The Ridges
Friday, February 17 from 7:00 - 11:30pm , The Ridges
Join Outdoor Pursuits and Astronomer George Eberts for an evening of stargazing and bonfire fun.We will spend the evening roasting marshmallows, spotting constellations, gazing through a telescope, and listening to tales of the night sky and Ridges lore. Fee includes transportation and bonfire snacks.
Cost is $8 per person.

Join Outdoor Pursuits on a day hike through the Old Mans Cave region of Hocking Hills State Park.
